Client Profile / Admissions Criteria

  • Delinquent or dependent females, between the ages of 13-18, with substance abuse issues and/or histories of emotional and behavioral issues.
  • An IQ of 70 or above is preferred but others will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Key Services

  • Intensive Drug and Alcohol Treatment program (64-beds).
  • General Residential program (30-beds).

Located in a residential Pittsburgh neighborhood, ACAF operates a 94-bed staff secure intensive drug and alcohol and general residential program.  Young women referred to ACAF have histories of substance abuse and/or emotional/behavioral needs, as well as educational deficits, mental health diagnoses and family issues.  Gender-specific treatment modalities include abuse and victimization, individual and group counseling, behavior management techniques and Twelve Step support.

ACAF also offers a full range of educational services at the Abraxas Pittsburgh School, which is fully licensed as a private school by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Clients can also attend classes for college credits through ACAF's partnership with a local community college.  A Culinary Arts program and a Life Skills/Work Readiness program are also available.  Family reintegration and aftercare services are offered to each client as a part of discharge planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What personal items am I permitted to bring?
     ACAF provides uniforms for clients, however, clients are asked to bring supplemental clothing (i.e. 
     coat/jacket, shoes, undergarmets, socks).  Approved personal items are allowed, but nothing in 
     glass, no aerosols, glues, or alcohol based products.

Who can visit me and when?
     Immediate family members.  Visits are Saturdays or Sundays, or by special arrangement.

Can I earn home passes?
     Yes, through our level system.

Can I make phone calls and whom can I call?
     Yes, one call per week to parent/legal guardian.  Staff members administer the phone calls.

Can I send and receive mail?
     Yes, you can send and receive mail.  You will be required to open incoming mail in front of a 
     staff member for security purposes.

Can I earn my high school diploma or GED?
     We provide educational services on-site, year round.  We offer credits that are transferable to 
     your home school, Special Education and learning support classes, GED preparation and 
     exams.  If a client has a GED or high school diploma, we provide alternative educational 
     programs, such as classes at the Community College of Allegheny County.

Will I have the opportunity to do community service?
     Yes.  Everyone has the opportunity to do community service on grounds.  Community service 
     may be performed off-site, which is determined by the client's privilege status.

Can I get a job on or off program grounds?
     Yes, once you reach the appropriate level.

Will my family be involved in my treatment?
     Yes, family involvement is strongly encouraged and is an integral part of treatment and 
     reintegration.  All treatment plan updates, quarterly reports and court progress reports will be 
     sent to the parent/legal guardian.

Will you provide transportation to the program once I am committed?
     Yes, we provide transportation.
