Frequently Asked Questions

What is the length of stay at your program?
The program average length of stay has been approximately 5 to 6 months.  A patient's length
of stay is determined by the progress he makes through his identified problems and moves
through the stages of change to correct them.  This is also determined on the amount of time it
takes him to daily express a recovery lifestyle.

What is available for school education at your program?
Abraxas Alternative Education Services provide a full six hours of school programming that
gives patients transferable school credits to their home school district.  Abraxas Alternative
Education Services also work with the School Districts to promote an easy transition back into
     school.

What availability is there for family participation?
There are three family groups per week.  They are Tuesday and Thursday evenings and
Saturday morning.  There is also visiting for families on Saturday morning directly after the
Saturday morning group.  Also families can set up an individual family counseling session with
     the Family Counselor.

What are the expectations for a patient to successfully complete the program?
Expectations of the program are for the client to grasp an understanding of the disease concept
of addiction and how it relates to their life prior to treatment.  The client progresses through five
levels of treatment (Orientation, Freshman, Soph, Junior, Senior) and their progress is measured
by their level of understanding of, adherence to, and commitment to the 7 key principles, BARJ
concepts, identifying and reducing thinking errors, and continued sobriety.  Clients progress
through the stages is further measured by points earned in all group/community activities.  Upon
achieving and maintaining Senior status for a sufficient time, they can present themselves to
the staff and outline their progress toward their stated goals, their immediate post discharge living
     arrangements, and aftercare treatment plans.

What specific services are offered at your program?
Patients have 30 hours of school education per week.  They have 25 hours of specialized
substance abuse treatment groups tailored for this population.  Patients have access to medical
care provided consistent with needs of the clients.  They also receive health education services
     and access to HIV/AIDS testing.

What can I leave money for my son to buy?
It is recommended that clients do not have money (and any money on them will be considered
contraband).  Emergency hygiene products, phone access, postage, and emergency
clothing/linen needs are covered by the program.

What is available for completion of Community Service hours?
There are a minimum of two outings per week for clients to complete community
service.  Volunteer work is completed at Humane Societies, shelters and food pantries, and
     Speaker’s Bureau outings.

What clothing and personal items are allowed in the program?
Families provide a plain dress code.  Plain blue jeans or plain blue Dickies/Dockers slacks are
appropriate.  Clients may wear plain white or blue shirts.  Nothing with logos or symbols is
allowed.  Due to the facility having on-site laundry machines for the clients to do their own
laundry, a maximum of seven days worth of clothing is permitted. There are no electronic devices
allowed (including CDs and DVDs).  The families provide them with hygiene products, towels,
shower shoes, plain white socks, underwear, solid white or solid black sneakers, and bedding for
a twin bed.  Families are also responsible for providing clients any seasonal items they
may need.  No items outside of program guidelines (cards, water bottles) will be allowed in the
     house.
