Client Profile / Admissions Criteria
Drug and Alcohol Treatment & Drug and Alcohol Education and Prevention:
- Delinquent or dependent males, between the ages of 14-18 who are in need of substance abuse treatment, substance abuse prevention and education or have a drug selling history.
- IQ of 70 or above (will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis).
Intensive Residential Program:
- Delinquent or dependent males, between the ages of 14-18 with a history of significant aggression, violent behavior and/or habitual criminal activity.
- IQ of 70 or above (will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis).

Located in the Allegheny National Forest, Abraxas I is a 258-bed staff secure residential facility with two service tracks that are supported by a transitional living component. The program has a cognitive, experiential treatment philosophy. Clients participate in a variety of therapeutically structured activities including individual and group counseling, clinical study, drug and alcohol prevention, aggression replacement training, life skills education, recreation and community service work in local communities.
Abraxas I also operates a private, licensed school, which offers a full range of educational services. Clients may earn a high school diploma, participate in on-site vocational programs, receive job readiness training or GED instruction and testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What personal items am I permitted to bring? Personal pictures of family, appropriate clothing, and any prescription medications.
Who can visit me and when? Two adult family members per pre-arranged visit. Visits are every other weekend. Other arrangements will be made as necessary due to parent work schedules, etc.
Can I earn home passes? Yes, with a minimum of 90 days in treatment, status 3 for three weeks, and approval by legal guardian and referral agent. Home passes for short term clients will be granted on a case by case basis.
Can I make phone calls and whom can I call? Yes, one 5 minute call per week to parent/legal guardian. Staff members administer the phone calls.
Can I send and receive mail? Yes, you can send and receive mail. You will be required to open incoming mail in front of a staff member for security purposes.
Can I earn my high school diploma or GED? Yes, we provide educational services on-site, year round. We offer credits that are transferable to your home school, Special Education classes and GED preparation and exams.
Will I have the opportunity to do community service? Yes. Depending on privilege status, community service may be performed on or off-site.
Can I get a job on or off program grounds? Clients who are GED or high school graduates can work on-grounds for a daily stipend.
Will my family be involved in my treatment? Yes, family involvement is strongly encouraged and is an integral part of treatment and reintegration. Parent/legal guardian will receive a monthly summary of progress via mail.
Will you provide transportation to the program once I am committed? Yes, we provide transportation.
