At 3:30 PM, free time begins where residents on privilege levels can watch educational programming, participate in supervised activities, and write letters. Dinner is served beginning at 4 PM. All units are given 50 minutes of gym time in the evening. Programming is held in the evenings/weekends and covers a variety of topics. Residents have a snack and get a shower every evening. Resident bedtimes are determined by their privilege level. Basic expectations are that residents are respectful and follow directions.
What can affect my length of stay at the Schaffner Youth Center? Length of stay can be affected by any number of the following: previous history with the juvenile justice system, previous placement history, the need for evaluations (psychological, psychiatric, drug and alcohol), difficulty in locating appropriate placement for treatment, and the nature of the charges.

Residents are given extra privileges/rewards when they surpass facility expectations. Such privileges include extra phone calls, later bedtimes, extra free time, and extra snacks, access to unit computers, additional hygiene items, and additional responsibilities on the units.
