Secure Habitual Offender Treatment Program
The Habitual Offender Program provides individualized treatment for delinquent male youth between the ages of 14-18 who demonstrate a consistent display of delinquent patterns through multiple placements, serious charges, and aggressive behaviors. The program offers a combination of treatment modalities which are facilitated through both weekly individual sessions and daily group sessions.
Treatment modalities include Aggression Replacement Training (ART) which is provided three times per week focusing on skill streaming and moral reasoning; Men's Work, which is designed to teach our young men about positive male identity and the difference between stereotypes and reality; Drug and Alcohol education utilizing the Matrix Model and Hazelton curriculum; Balanced and Restorative Justice principles; and Cognitive Distortions/Thinking Errors. Residents progress through our own specially designed habitual offender curriculum: Overcoming Life's Hurdles. The group curriculum is divided into six core areas in which each resident has to show an understanding of the competency before progressing in the program.
Secure Sexual Offender Treatment Program
The Sexual Offender Program provides offense specific treatment for delinquent males between the ages of 14-18 with a history of sexual offenses or current sexual offense adjudication.
The Pathways curriculum is used in conjunction with appropriate assessment, weekly core group and individual counseling sessions to address the sexual behavior issues of youth in our care. Through progressive stages of clinical treatment, youth are expected to gain a better understanding on issues of clarification, boundaries, relationships, consent, empathy, distortions, alternatives, relapse prevention, and overall accountability for their sexual behavior and contributing issues that led to placement. The Pathways group curriculum is divided into six core areas and each resident has to show an understanding of each competency before progressing in the program.
Our secure detention services include multiple screenings and assessments, transportation, education, individual and group counseling.
Abraxas Academy Shelter is a short term program for male and female youth ages 11 to 18 who are involved with Children and Youth Services and/or Juvenile Probation. Our shelter provides many opportunities to help juveniles develop and/or strengthen their emotional, social, intellectual, and life skills in a safe and healthy environment.
While in shelter, youth attend our licensed, private, on-site school. We offer family counseling as well as group sessions to include components of the Girls Circle and ART® curricula as well as The Sanctuary Model®, problem solving, life skills and critical thinking.
Community involvement is an essential part of Abraxas Academy Shelter. Residents in the shelter program may have the opportunity to participate in community service, educational, and recreational outings, if approved by their referring agency. We have numerous community partners to include Berks Women in Crisis, Hands in Service, Humane Society of Berks County, and Shady Hollow Assisted Riding.
